Adapting to the tech start-up space!

Stepping into the tech industry at the beginning of the year 2023, marked a significant milestone in my life. I can only relate that to being a first-time mom, when, despite all the books read, real-life experiences shared, or even old wives’ tales heard, nothing prepares you for your own real-life experience.

Transitioning careers late in life, I approached my new role with a mix of excitement and butterflies fluttering ever so lightly in my belly. Looking back on my first year, I can confidently say that it's always possible to embark on a new journey. Never mind the shape or size that the experiences are boxed in! This role has pushed me beyond any limit I thought I had attained, challenged my assumptions, and accelerated my personal growth in ways I had never imagined or expected.

Here are a few invaluable lessons I've learned along the way:

Essential Skills for Successful Career Change

Embrace the Power of Starting Anew:

Initially, I felt self-conscious about my non-traditional background in tech. However, I quickly realized that the startup tech industry bursts with promise, all for the taking. In each one of us, there are uncharted waters, unexplored frontiers of indigenous forests, and virgin land, all stretched in between our two ears, open and ready to receive the seed of promise to be the next great thing!

There was a plethora of skills to be learned, values to be instilled, diversity to embrace, and a shift of perspectives that challenged our thinking.  In Steve Covey’s book “The Seven Habits of Highly Successful People," Habit 7 - Sharpen the Saw—talks about “Continuously improving yourself through learning, growth, and renewal.” The tech space was a renewal for me. It has challenged my status quo of accomplishing tasks traditionally and leveraging AI as an enabler to enhance my efficiency.  The learning curve during my first 90 days of career transition was steeper than the valleys that roll down the escarpment along the Nairobi-Maai Mahiu route.

Traditional HR meant physical documents, but now I have discovered that there is a documentation process that uses zero and one that makes perfect sense in the tech space.  Although my experiences brought context to the table, there was a whole new world of unlearning, learning, and re-learning that took place - challenging the adage, ‘You can’t teach an old dog new tricks’.   I am a living testament to the fact that it is never too late to reinvent yourself and pursue new opportunities. In the tech start-up space, be ready to hit the reset button every so often because innovation and agility require just that - the reset button.

Challenge your thinking:

In the rapidly evolving world of technology, there is a unique mindset that is required when transitioning to a career in tech It's essential to constantly examine and update our mental models. To expound on this further, a mental model is an individual's internal representation of the external world, which helps them understand, interact with, and make predictions about their environment. A successful career change requires us to embrace new concepts and let go of old ways of thinking. To expand our understanding, we must actively "change our wineskin" and remain open to new ideas once we have worked on and proven a hypothesis.  Indeed, even computers have a favorite snack to eat -  Microchips!  And it's not your usual  Krackles, Pringles, et el!

By continually challenging my thinking, I gain a better understanding of different elements of work.  Decision-making is faster, problems are solved faster, and it is easier to predict what can go wrong in certain instances, pull the plug and start all over again.  Thomas Edison, when inventing the light bulb, did it and so can I.  This enhances communication so that teammates are on the same level of understanding, and there are lessons to be learned in the process.

Design Your Path:

In the world of fashion, the likes of Balenciaga, Christian Dior, and Chanel, to name but a few, you too are a world designer of your life!

Although this statement may sound like an idiomatic expression, with my newfound autonomy in the tech space, I discovered the importance of aligning my daily choice of activities and interactions with my highest values. This freedom came with a great deal of responsibility. The realization that unchecked old habits can become a new definition of my value system and lead me astray is ever-present in my mind. Every day, I consciously decide whether to fuel my highest self or fall back into reactive patterns.
During a career transition, one should be mentally conscious of self-determination, intentionality, and take an active role in shaping their life's journey according to their desires and priorities, rather than passively accepting whatever path presents itself.

Uncover Hidden Brilliance:

Working alongside extremely talented individuals on my teams is a humbling experience. However, sometimes their brilliance remained obscured due to natural humility or communication gaps. There is incredible wisdom that can be uncovered around me by asking questions and intentionally seeking insight.

Curiosity has become a gateway to unlocking hidden potential. In the tech start-up space, the question “Why” not once or twice but up to five times, encourages curiosity. Curiosity leads to creative thinking and problem-solving by engaging in activities that stimulate imagination and innovation.  a mindset of curiosity and a willingness to explore new ideas and perspectives.

It's often said that feedback is breakfast for champions! Seek and give feedback to gain different perspectives and insights that can help uncover hidden talents or strengths. The power of feedback propels one out of their comfort zone to try out new things and discover untapped potential.

Take time to reflect on your strengths, weaknesses, and areas of interest to uncover hidden talents or passions.

Most importantly, collaborate with others to leverage diverse skills and expertise, which can lead to unexpected discoveries and insights.

Trust the Process:

Career transitions take time and patience. One of my most significant epiphanies was realizing that true transformation takes time and patience.  Just as agile technology projects unfold iteratively before breakthroughs occur, my journey towards competency and purpose followed a similar path. Trusting the larger process has accelerated my progress in unimaginable ways.

Reflecting on this adventure-filled first year, I now have the opportunity to pay it forward by mentoring new hires from diverse backgrounds as I too get inducted into various aspects of the world of tech.  My own experiences of growth and stretching have equipped me with empathy and encouragement to help others discover and trust their latent talents. As I look ahead to another year filled with surprises, I am excited about the continued learning and growth that awaits me.

In conclusion, my first year in tech has been an incredible adventure. Should I ever see a spider in the tech space, I know that he is making a website!  When my laptop decided to go and see the dentist - I figured out he just wanted to get his blue tooth checked.

It has taught me that it's never too late to pursue new paths, challenge my thinking, take ownership of my choices, recognize the brilliance in others, and trust the process of growth. With renewed enthusiasm, I eagerly embrace the opportunities that lie ahead as I continue to evolve in this dynamic industry.

Here's to 2024 - another year of exciting discoveries and development!
